Squad Members
Gateway's 'squad members' are representing the club as our elite boxers, competing on the junior amateur circuit from 10 years old.
Boxers are selected for the squad by our qualified coaching staff and given the opportunity to become part of a growing number of youngsters finding their feet in the ancient art of boxing. Selection depends on age, ability and a willingness to work hard to become the best boxer that their talent allows.
Overseen by our qualified coaches, each potential squad member will take part in regular inter-club sparring sessions against opponents of similar age, weight and ability to develop their skills and competitiveness in the boxing ring. Sparring sessions at other local clubs as well as visiting clubs will further develop the skills required to move to the next level and start competing on the amateur circuit.
Supported by the club, and only when deemed to be ready, squad members will begin their personal journey through the amateur ranks by competing in registered ABA shows and National tournaments, gaining valuable knowledge and experience of what it's like to compete at the highest level.
Each squad member must be registered by the governing body, England Boxing, and will need to undergo a stringent medical examination as part of the process of being 'carded'.
To build up their record, boxers will be matched depending on age, weight, experience and number of bouts using England Boxing's central database of records to get the most suitable matches. It is a compulsory requirement that all amateur boxers record cards are updated following every registered bout that they participate in.
The ultimate goal in the amateur ranks is selection for the National coaching programme and becoming part of Team GB and potentially representing their country at the Commonwealth or Olympic Games.
So why not start now and see if you have what it takes to become a champion. And remember, you don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great!!
